How to Create A Housekeeping Checklist

1. Take Inventory

The first thing you’ll need to do is grab a writing instrument and a clipboard or a notebook. Walkthrough your space, room by room, taking a realistic inventory of the areas and tasks that will make up your housekeeping checklist.

2. Make a Schedule

In your notebook or clipboard, list all the rooms and areas in your home or facility, including hallways, stairways, and entryways.  Then decide how often each room will be cleaned. Some rooms need cleaning every day, and some weekly. Categorize each room by providing a schedule on when they will be cleaned.

3. List All the Cleaning Tasks That Needs to be Done in Every Room

Beside each room category, list down all the cleaning tasks that should be done there. Below is an example of tasks you can include in your checklist:

  1. Kitchen: Clean and disinfect garbage can, microwave, oven, stove, counters,  and sink. Wipe baseboards, cabinets, and surfaces. Sweep and mop floors. Wash dishes. Throw away spoiled food.
  2. Dining Room: Vacuum floors and upholstery. Wipe down the table and chairs. Wash windows and window sills. Wipe glass surfaces. Dust blinds (if you have). Replace and wash curtains every month.
  3. Living Room/Study Room/Office Room/Recreational Room: Dust furniture, shelves, appliances, lamps, lighting fixtures, and electronic gadgets. Sweep or vacuum floors and corners. Wash the windows. Organize your items. Wipe down surfaces. Throw out the garbage.
  4. Bedrooms: Change and wash linens. Fluff the pillows. Dust furniture, baseboards, lamps, and lighting fixtures. Wash the curtains. Sweep or vacuum the floor. Organize stuff on your closet, night table, shelves, and vanity table. Wash windows. Wash the dirty clothes. Clean the mirror.
  5. Bathrooms: Sanitize sink, counters, toilet, and bathtub. Change and wash the shower curtain and shower mats. Wipe the walls. Sweep and mop the floor. Organize cupboards. Throw the garbage. Replace toiletries when they are running low. Wipe down the mirror.

3. Use the Cleaning Materials You Have

Make a sub-checklist of the materials that you will need. It’s impossible that you don’t have any cleaning materials in your home or facility, so use them when you’re cleaning. List down the current cleaning materials you have so you will know what lacking materials you have so you can buy them in stores.  Having the cleaning materials you need on hand will help your house cleaning be more efficient.
