What is a Delivery Order?
A delivery order is described as a type of document that is being issued by a specific carrier, carrier’s agent, or by one who is in authority to release a cargo into a named party or to another carrier on behalf of the named party. These orders are only issued right after a consignee surrendered an endorsed bill of lading. However, a delivery order should be defined separately from the bill of lading because both of them were exactly different. A bill of lading is the one who provides an outline of the cargo’s journey from the source to its destination. This is being issued by the carrier to give details of the path of the cargo shipment which will be used as a contract for its movement. A delivery order, on the other hand, is not a negotiable document and should not be used as an evidence or receipt.
Contents of a Delivery Order
One thing to know about having deliveries is that you should be able to communicate between the sender and the receiver. Your delivery order must contain the following contents:
1. Name and contact details of the seller
2. Name and contact details of the buyer
3. Date issued
4. Date of delivery of the goods
5. Description of the goods
6. Quantity of each type of goods
7. Signature of the receiver as a confirmation that the order has been already received.
For the sellers, it would be easier if you would be consistent with your branding. For example, make sure that your logo also appears on the delivery order. In this manner, it will make the shipment be easily identified by the customer as well as helping your brand to easily get a promotion extending your professional image.
Although there are some delivery orders that do not include the prices of the items, some would also choose to have one depending on the type of industry you are in and the products that are being shipped. Usually, we tend to see more of the product number. Sometimes, it would also include the payment information as a confirmation and reminder for contact and for payment purposes.
