You asked for a ton of advice. You have contemplated about it so many times. You cannot extend it any longer. That is okay. Sometimes, there are just some things that do not seem to last. One of those things might be the job you currently have. Whatever your reasons may be, may it be because of compensation, the environment, your colleagues, your boss, or that you want to venture into another career, quitting your job is the solution you might be looking for.

When your mind is already made up about leaving your current company, remember to follow a few resignation etiquette. Quitting your job is not as easy as just walking out the door and never looking back. You want to make sure that your exit from your company will not leave you any problems in the future. One of the few things that you need to prepare for this journey is your two weeks notice letter. Your two weeks notice will let your employer know that you are only willing to render two more weeks worth of work. Once your resignation has been approved, you will then be on your way to a fresh new start.

But what is the best thing to do when it comes to sending your two weeks notice? Worry not as we will be giving you a guideline about some of the things you need to do. We will also be presenting a few two weeks notice samples that will serve as your reference in case you are at a loss about how you should start your letter. Check out the guidelines we have below.

Giving Two Weeks Notice: The Exit Strategy

Leaving your company on a high note is what you want to achieve. This is why you need to have a strong exit strategy already in mind in order for you to make your exit as smooth as possible. Here’s how you can exit from your company with grace.

Your Boss Should be the First One to Know.

We know it can be very tempting to tell your colleagues about your plans of quitting your jobs. But you have to know that whispering can turn into gossiping, and before you know it, your boss is already crossing his/her arms and raising an eyebrow before you can even set foot in his/her office.

What’s the best thing to do? Tell your boss/manager first before you tell your colleagues. Clearly explain to him/her your plans about leaving, when you plan your last day to be, and how you want others to know about your departure. There might also be things that you need to sort out with your manager first such as tasks and projects that you need to finish and take care of before you exit from the company.

Counteroffers are Inevitable.

If you are a well-performing employee, the chances that your boss will give you a counteroffer is highly likely. Think twice before you accept it. Think if it is what you need at the moment and if it is one of the factors that will change your mind about your decision. You have to ensure that you are a hundred percent sure of your decision if you intend to accept it. We do not want regrets in the end, right? Assess your situation carefully.

Keep a Positive Attitude.

Keeping calm and positive despite any negative reason you might have is a key to making your departure from the company as smooth as possible. Remember that you should not use your resignation as a means to vent your frustrations about anything that is related to the company even if your reason for leaving is actually about the company. In short: fake it until your departure date. It might not be easy but trust us, keeping your mouth shut of all the negativity will go a long way. You do want that employer recommendation letter from your boss to be positive, right? Just smile your way through the next two weeks and you will be fine.

Finish all that is Not Yet Done.

Still have an ongoing project? A task due within the week? Upcoming projects? Use the two weeks you have remaining as a way to make this transition for the company and the colleagues you leave behind as smooth as possible. Finish what you can and leave detailed instructions about anything that is not yet done.

Keep Existing Relationships Strong.

Make an effort to maintain a positive attitude toward your remaining days in the office. You want your colleagues to think that you are a dedicated employee and that you are a good employee as well. You never know, the next time you decide to change companies, you might meet them again. They can definitely put in a good word for you.
