Perhaps the first thing that you need to figure out when you want to venture into business is what products to sell. This is of course influenced by either your knowledge you have on materials are on trends or materials you know you can make, promote, or advertise. For instance, if you are a baker, you may want to bake and sell cookies or pastries.

But the what to sell is one thing, whether the number of what your selling to your customers is enough or not is another story. Imagine, if you only baked a dozen of cupcakes and you have hundreds of customers lining up outside your bakeshop, now that’s a loss of profit right there, and a hundreds of disappointed patrons.

Aside from thinking what sort of products you can jump-start your business with, you should also be familiar of the reports and paperwork that come with it, one of which is an inventory report. An inventory report is a document that contains a record of items such as supplies or commodity consumable for a specific period or time. Inventories can range from the checking of materials necessary for assembling or building products or they can either be products ready made to sell.

The Importance of Accuracy in Inventory

  • An accurate inventory can help in planning what products to buy and sell that you know are going to improve your operations.
  • Good inventory can also improve your company’s customer’s service. There are times that your customers would want to ask you questions about the products that they wish to order, such as its availability. By doing an inventory, you will be more quick in dealing with your customers, plus, the probability of canceling their orders will decrease.
  • It can improve your staff and your operations. Inventory reports entail organization and when everything is organized, the company therefore is on time and more efficient. This means that your staff can also attend to other matters regarding your transactions and operations.

Some Tips on How to Make an Inventory Report

  • First, prepare a table, you can make this out of columns and rows and label. But with our samples, I am pretty sure that this might be the easiest part.
  • List the items that you need to check. If your business is in line with food, a bakeshop or a restaurant perhaps, you need to check for the availability of ingredients.
  • Take note of the items that you don’t have and of the ones that are still available; make sure that you check their number or how many are these and how long the latter are going to last.
  • You also might want to write descriptions for the items, to avoid the confusion and buying the wrong products.
