Regular employee work hours range from 8 to 9 hours per day and an average of 40 hours per week. Those working with a 9-hour shift are entitled to a one-hour lunch break. Full-time employees with day jobs usually start their shifts from 9 am until 5 pm. Employees who are working in 24/7 retail stores work with a shifting schedule. What’s a retail employee schedule and how does it work? Let’s go ahead and find out.

What Is a Retail Employee Schedule?

Retail store employees follow a pre-plotted schedule. It tells them what days they’ll report to work in a week and what time of day they should come to work. Employees work in shifting schedules, especially those who work in 24-hour retail stores. The store owner or manager decides the work schedule assigned to each employee. During peak season, which is usually around November to December, employees go on overtime to accommodate customers who will be flocking the stores to buy gift items. This increases the store’s sales that is why some employers would demand mandatory overtime.

Plotting an employee’s work schedule is an important task and must be taken seriously. Looking at samples of work schedules may make scheduling seem easy, but actually making the staff schedule is difficult. A small mistake will affect everyone else’s work schedule. This is true even with the use of a retail employee schedule software, although it makes the task a tad easier. Schedulers must be mindful of the employee schedules they plot to avoid work schedule conflicts.

Are You a Lark or a Night Owl?

There is a popular saying that goes, “The early bird catches the worm.” Well, they’re probably referring to a lark. Larks are small species of birds that start their day very early. People who sleep from around 10 pm to 6 am are considered human larks. These people feel really energetic and eager to work after they wake up in the morning. This work schedule is called lark time. If you’re a human lark, then you should have your office meeting scheduled in the morning.

Lark’s aren’t the only birds with a sample work schedule. The more popular work schedule is the night owl hours. It’s because night owls are only awake at night to hunt. Night owl humans function best in the afternoon and evening. Call center training schedule and work schedules start later in the day or in the evening. The night owl hour work schedule, like the call center work schedule, is perfect for people who find it hard to make it to the office at 9 am. So, which work schedule works for you? Is it the lark time or the night owl hour?

How to Make an Employee Schedule

Whoever said that making an employee schedule is easy has never tried doing one before. There is no room for mistakes in making an employee schedule so you have to be extra careful. Follow the steps below to help you make a useful employee schedule.

Step #1: Who are your team members?

Know your team and what they are good at or what they’re trained for. Also, ask about their work preferences and available time. This information is very helpful in building a good work schedule. It also ensures that you won’t have to struggle with absenteeism.

Step #2: Distribute your best employees on different shifts.

Make sure to have one of your best employees in each shift. They’re not called the best if they’re lousy and unproductive, right? These employees can lead and inspire other employees on the same shift to do their best.

Step #3: Provide your work schedule a week ahead.

There may be changes with the availability of your employees. Providing a work schedule ahead of time will allow them enough time to request for adjustments and look for someone to swap shifts with.

Step #4: Let your employees find their substitutes.

If an employee is unavailable for a specific shift, have them look for their own substitute. This works better than adding more burden on yourself as the scheduler. Who knows, they might find another employee who is in need of their schedule.

Step #5: Create a backup plan for your backup plan.

Always prepare as many backup plans as you can. You’ll never know when you’ll encounter endless problems. The backup plans you have readied will save you.
