What is a Rotating Shift Schedule?
The book “Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety, Volume 3,” shift work can be permanent work at night, or work hours can have changing assignment patterns. Each type of shift system has its advantages and disadvantages being associated with varying effects on health, social life, well-being, and work performance.
A rotating shift schedule is typically a timetable demonstrating a scheduling system where employees move through a cycle of working the day shift, the night shift, and any swing shifts that may be needed. The first shift would run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. while the second shift would run from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.
How to Create a Rotating Shift Schedule
If you’re the person in charge of designing shift systems in your company, you should carefully consider the workload, the working environment, and the conditions outside the workplace. So, what are the things you need to do? In order to create a structured work shift schedule, below are some beneficial tips to consider:
1. Provide advance notice of shift work
As the team leader or manager of your work department, you should always inform your members and other employees regarding the latest schedule of their shift work ahead of time. It’s okay to provide advance notices and announcements to each of your team members or employees rather than being late because it will prevent them from having severe stress or burnout.
2. Divide the work shifts in logical order
Based on some research studies conducted by Bolt and Rutenfraz, extra working days in succession can lead to an aggregation of fatigue and sometimes overexposure to toxic substances. So, it is recommended that you allocate at least 24 hours off between sets of night shifts, as well as limit the number of consecutive working days between 5 to 7 to provide enough time for healthy sleep.
3. Include proper rest periods
For your workers’ overall well-being, health and safety, you need to figure out the time necessary to give them adequate periods of rest, including breaks during working hours, lunch breaks, morning or evening rest and weekly rest. Studies have shown that fatigue develops when an employee performs heavy physical work.
That’s why it’s fundamental for the employee to stop and rest at intervals. An experimental study revealed that the highest initial speed and subsequent performance was found in the group of workers having rest periods after each 15 minutes of work.
4. Practice flexibility
While working on each of their schedules, allow your team members or employees to exchange shifts, prioritize their needs and preferences, etc. This will help the workers to become productive and efficient on their respective tasks and assignments.
