For most of us, especially particular individuals who really enjoy traveling around the world, getting to know a country is a very long process that usually just takes a whole lot of time. There’s so much to read about and for the casual traveler, its just not worth it. They’d prefer to go and travel to another country blind with little to no background of their destination, rather than spending hours and hours on reading about the country, its history, culture, tourist spots, etc. Suppose you’re a travel agent that wants to attract traffic to specific countries to increase tourism revenue, or maybe you just want to give your family a quick snapshot of the country you’re going to for vacation. Either way, you want to present a country’s profile, history, culture, and other relevant information, in a compressed, short, clear, and concise manner. Something that will only take a few minutes to read, and already contains all the information they might need. And a great way to do that is to develop a country fact sheet.

What Is a Country Fact Sheet?

A fact sheet is a document that’s usually 1 to 2 pages long and contains relevant information of a certain subject. Like an elevator pitch, something that provides factual, and relevant information in a short, yet clear and concise manner. It’s made to mainly keep up with the waning attention spans of most audiences today. Most people generally don’t want to spend time reading something that’s more than a couple pages long and just contains seemingly endless text. Fact sheets are also done in a visually appealing manner to give emphasis to the information that is being presented and to make sure that it doesn’t lose the readers’ interest.

How to Write a Country Fact Sheet

Writing a country fact sheet is not as simple as just slapping pieces of information in a sheet of paper. It takes quite more than that to ensure it is proper, the information is clear, concise, easy to understand, engaging, and most importantly it stays professional but at the same time visually appealing. You have to know what you’re doing or else, your fact sheet loses structure and you’ll end up confusing other people rather than actually informing them. These key components will be discussed more in detail below.

  1. Header
The header is your title. It can simply just be the name of the country or other much more fitting title that can easily pique your audience’s interest like ‘The Land of Ice and Fire’ for Iceland, or ‘The Land of Smiles’ for Thailand. You may just need to do a bit of research but, that is the point of the fact sheet. Also make sure to use bold fonts ang big font sizes, we want to immediately get their attention with a fitting title and great fonts.
  2. Layout
Before you actually put the information, try to get a sense of the overall layout first. Where do things go inside your fact sheet? Make sure to lay it out clearly as to not confuse the readers. Try to put the visuals first to get a proper sense of the layout of the text and see if it fits. A good layout also ensures that your fact sheet is clean and comprehensive, the contents are not all over the place and it just makes sense overall.
  3. Content
Don’t make your content too long or too much or too short. There’s a gray area in between that’s just right content for your fact sheet. It’s best to only put the more important ones like a brief history, brief cultural background of the country, languages mainly spoken, of course the tourist spots or well recognized areas in the country like famous restaurants or hotels or museums or monuments etc. It’s also good if you include the currency used and international conversion rates as they will be spending money so it’s good to have that in mind as well. Overall, that’s just about all the information you might need to include, you can choose to put more if you think it’s necessary, just make sure that it’s still clear, concise, and short.
  4. Call to action
You may or may not include this component as it mainly depends on the purpose of your fact sheet. It can be along the lines of ‘Travel now!’ or ‘Call *this number* for more information’ or something else. Again, it’s up to you, the purpose of this is to give the audience and idea as to what to do with this information that you’ve just given them.
