The impact of a land-grant program is defined as the measurable and verifiable difference it makes in people’s lives. The documented outcomes of a program, course or research project are known as impacts. Impact statements show how our work has a positive impact on people’s lives, communities, and the environment. Funders and stakeholders are increasingly expecting us to document the outcomes of our efforts. Through impact statements and impact reports, those of us in the public sector identify and demonstrate how our work affects our clients’ economic, environmental, and social well-being.

Impact statements are used by businesses to communicate how their operations make a difference. Many organizations want to give the impression that they are truly concerned about the well-being of the communities they serve. The impact statement summarizes the company’s initiative, including why it was implemented, who it benefits from, and what community benefits can be expected. An impact initiative that benefits the environment or members of underserved socioeconomic groups is a common example. The Initiative
An impact statement explains what a company is doing to make a positive difference and provide intrinsic value to others. School districts are an example of an organization that frequently implements initiatives for its employees as well as the communities it serves. A school district may start an initiative that allows students to choose from a set of career-focused elective courses in order to better prepare high school students for potential professional opportunities. Community colleges and school districts may collaborate to offer vocational and liberal arts courses for college credit. Existing teaching staff can also participate in this type of initiative by mentoring students in the development of leadership and job-search skills.
Action
What a company is doing to implement its initiative is detailed in part of its impact statement. Use of recyclable packaging, the removal of saturated fats from products, and a 50% reduction in byproduct waste are all possible actions. Instilling a sense of support for the company by stating what the company has done to benefit the users of its products. When customers give a company their business, the actions detailed in an impact statement reveal that they are doing more than just buying a product or service. It’s a way for customers to help others while also contributing to the company’s initiative.
Results
The majority of impact statements will include a section that summarizes the company’s initiative’s outcomes. This section will describe how the product’s community or users have benefited. For example, a results statement might state that thanks to a company-sponsored donation program, a local battered women’s shelter was capable of serving 30% more clients. “Standardized test scores of graduates have increased by 10% in the last year,” for example, is another example of a results statement.
Purpose
An impact statement should include the reasons why companies choose to participate in initiatives or start their own. While this section of the statement could be short or long, it demonstrates why the company believes the initiative is worthwhile. It could describe the problem that the company’s actions are attempting to solve as well as the consequences of failing to do so. Lower standardized test scores, for example, may limit the post-secondary education options for students who are otherwise capable and talented. When a student is unable to meet college admissions requirements, his upward mobility and professional goals may be hampered in the future.
