What are Strategy Skills?

How to Utilize Strategy Skills

In the wise words of Wayne Gretzky, “you miss every shot you don’t take.” From finding a loophole in every argument to planning out your company’s next move to generate revenue, strategy skills are the traits that pioneer modern-day entrepreneurship. However, developing these strategy skills isn’t the end of it as utilizing them well defines the difference between a good entrepreneur and a great strategist. Here are a few general tips and tricks to using your skillset well.

1. Pick an Area of Specialty

The world of marketing is broad in various areas. From the hazardous work of construction to the mentally-draining work of advertisement conceptualizing, there is a multitude of jobs that need your strategic services. Thus, to avoid being overwhelmed, it’s best to start with one area of specialty and finishing it before moving on to the next as to not overload your repertoire.

2. Seek Advice and Knowledge

Even though it seems mundane and blatantly obvious, very few people understand the value of the word “help.” Seeking advice and knowledge in difficult aspects of your task is not a sign of weakness; in fact, strategists today have entire counsels and meetings to plan out their courses of action. After all, just because it’s a one-page strategic business plan doesn’t mean it was conceived by one person only.

3. Take Calculated Risks

There’s a difference between a calculated risk and being careless. Buying off a business using revenue accumulated from a previously successful investment is different from jumping head-first into a herd of angry Spanish bulls. Remember that it’s best to look at the predicament from every angle and determine the proper approach to take.

4. Understand the Need for Failure

As painful a pill as it is to swallow, you will fail a few times—this isn’t an option but a given. However, fully utilizing your strategy skills means that despite this reality you still use your skills. Not being afraid to take this calculated risk (see above-mentioned step) leads to a higher probability of success overall.

The effective use of strategy skills is what propels employees, managers, CEOs, and businesses worldwide. The ability to perceive a particular situation and formulate a course of action is a highly-sought out trait. However, like any other talent, what good are well-developed skills if you don’t make good use of them? At the end of the day, the defining factor of success through a given skillset is the individual who possesses them.
