A number of us are quite fascinated and intrigued with astrology and the zodiac. In fact, astrology originated thousands of years ago in Babylonia inventing the first astrological system and creating what we know as the zodiac wheel or chart. The study of the stars was a popular activity thousands of years ago, astronomers have relied on the stars for guidance during travels whether on sea or land. When you look upon the stars on a clear evening far away from all the city lights, on some occasions you will be able to spot a certain alignment of stars in the sky which could be one of the zodiac signs. The zodiac, the 12 signs listed in a horoscope, is closely tied to how the earth moves through the sky. To learn more about this, let us discuss this further below. And if you need any templates to help you understand this chart better, we’ve got a list of zodiac chart samples that are downloadable for free on this page.

What is a Zodiac Chart?
Studying astrology is a complex activity, but this is usually associated with the 12-star signs of the zodiac which are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. To determine what your star sign is would mean checking your exact date of birth which is as follows:
- Aries (Ram): March 21–April 19
- Taurus (Bull): April 20–May 20
- Gemini (Twins): May 21–June 21
- Cancer (Crab): June 22–July 22
- Leo (Lion): July 23–August 22
- Virgo (Virgin): August 23–September 22
- Libra (Balance): September 23–October 23
- Scorpius (Scorpion): October 24–November 21
- Sagittarius (Archer): November 22–December 21
- Capricornus (Goat): December 22–January 19
- Aquarius (Water Bearer): January 20–February 18
- Pisces (Fish): February 19–March 20
In Asia, particularly in China which has its own interpretation of the zodiac signs is quite different from the ones mentioned above. Determining your own Chinese zodiac is based on the year of birth and is associated with different animals such as the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Each sign is named after an animal, and each has its own unique characteristics.
How To Understand the Zodiac Chart Better
At first glance, a zodiac chart looks so complicated and hard to understand with all those writings and signs that are difficult to understand. Technically, there are different versions of the zodiac chart/wheel out there, both for western and eastern zodiac signs some are complicated with various symbols but it has always had the following elements:
- The 12 zodiac signs
- The four elements: water, fire, wind, and earth (for western zodiac)
- The five elements: water, earth, metal, wood, and fire (Chinese zodiac)
For the western zodiac other important components you need to remember are as follows:
- The Houses: the chart is divided into 12 divisions which are known as the houses, and begins with the Ascendant( Rising sign, outer personality) , at the middle left on the wheel. The numbers go up, as you move around the chart counter-clockwise.
- Zodiac Signs: the zodiac signs run counter-clockwise around the wheel.
- Each house has 30 degrees, and so does each Zodiac sign.
- Horizontal Line and the Meridian: both cross-quarter points on the chart. These are the Ascendant, the Descendant(your persona in a relationship), the IC (Imum Coeli, private life), and the MC (Medium Coeli or Midheaven, public life).
For Chinese zodiac charts, determining your zodiac is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. So for whatever date did the Chinese new year take place in that particular year would be your sign. If it fell on February 4 but you were born a day earlier would mean you need to follow the sign before the new year. To find out what Chinese zodiac element you fall under, just check the last number in your birth year and match it to the element listed for that number. Then combine these with you zodiac animal, for example Wood Rat.
- 0 or 1, your element is metal.
- 2 or 3, your element is water.
- 4 or 5, your element is wood.
- 6 or 7, your element is fire.
- 8 or 9, your element is earth.
