What Is a Birth Plan?

A birth plan is a written document that explains the process before, during, and after childbirth. This is a type of communication wherein you can exactly speak to your medical provider (personal doctor or midwife) about what you want to happen from pre-delivery to post-delivery. If you are under medication, with an existing illness, or are allergic to any medication, you can also indicate that on your birth plan so your healthcare provider can prepare an alternate medication for you.

How To Write a COVID-19 Birth Plan?

In the midst of the current pandemic, it is recommended that you prepare for the delivery of your baby and your own safety carefully. We have prepared some tips and advice which you can follow when writing your birth plan which you can read below.

1. List Down Your Preferences

First, do research on various things such as where you want to give birth, i.e., hospitals, birthing clinic, or at home. If you choose the first two options, you can then choose who you want to go to the healthcare institution during your labor and after delivery. If you want to feel relaxed before giving birth to ease your anxiety, you can write down the things you want to experience such as aromatherapy or listening to calming music. You can also list down the type of relaxation massage that should be given to you when in labor pain. Be specific about your wants and needs so that your healthcare provider and companions can be prepared beforehand.

2. State Your Medical Condition

If you are a pregnant woman suffering from any illness or disease, you should include it on your birth plan. Provide information about what type of equipment should be used during the delivery. If you need to go undergo a Cesarean section procedure to deliver the baby, say it. If you are unable to deliver normally, write down why. Knowing about your medical conditions and/or what can be harmful to you and the baby will also help your doctors create a strategic plan and appropriate medical treatment to help you go through your pregnancy safely.

3. Provide Information on Your Post-Natal Care

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 after the birth of your baby, you can inquire about post-natal care guidelines available in the facility should you not be allowed to look after them. It would also be helpful if you know what type of medical treatments your baby will undergo and if there are certain tests showing any abnormal results that may be harmful to the child. If you are not sure about the hospitals giving your baby vitamin shots, you can also prefer to write it down on your birth plan.

4. Consult Your Doctor or Midwife

If you want to make sure that your birth plan will work for you, it is highly suggested that you consult with your healthcare provider. Not only can they give you proper advice and explanation, but they can also help you create a birth plan that will cater to your needs. Sometimes, writing your preferences may express what you want, but they might not be exactly what you need, and so doctors and midwives may not fulfill your wishes just so they can save you and the baby.

Should I get an RTPCR test before giving birth?

Pregnant women are not allowed to roam and go outside the house during the pandemic, but that is not to say they cannot be affected by the virus. If you are pregnant and suspect yourself to have contracted the virus, it would be best to call your healthcare provider and ask whether you will need to undergo an RTPCR test and if it is safe for you and the baby to do so.

What happens when my healthcare provider does not follow the birth plan?

Healthcare providers highly respect the choices and preferences of their patients, and despite being reluctant to follow some of their requests, they fulfill them for the sake of professionalism. However, when the patient’s demands are not aligned with what they really need during the labor and delivery process, doctors or midwives will definitely perform alternative procedures to keep the mother and child unharmed.

To whom should I share my birth plan?

You can share your birth plan with your spouse or healthcare provider to whom you can discuss your choices and whether they are good for you and the baby. If you are a pregnant woman living with your family, you can share your birth plan with either your parents or siblings.

Giving birth is a long and complicated process, but is a joyful occasion once you see the baby. During this time of the pandemic, it pays to be safe and aware so that you cannot jeopardize your own and your child’s health.
