Preliminary Requirements

  • Get a degree. Although a degree is not necessary to be able to fly a plane, a four-year Bachelor of Science degree is usually required by most commercial airlines. The degree may or may not be related to aeronautics or aviation.
  • Serve your hours. Depending on the country’s laws, a pilot in training would usually need at least 250 hours of flight experience. Flight schools and qualified flight instructors help aspiring pilots gain the necessary experience to qualify for their licenses.
  • Earn your license. After completing the required number of hours, you can now comply with the rest of the requirements for a commercial pilot’s license. To get your licence, you must pass a physical examination that ensures you have reasonably good vision and hearing. Contrary to popular belief, however, you can still be a pilot even if you need glasses as long as you meet the minimum requirements with your corrective instruments. Aside from this, you would also be required to pass a written exam as well as a skills test observed by a certified instructor.
  • Take and pass other tests and training. Depending on the position you wish to apply to, there may be additional tests you must first pass before you can be qualified to fly commercial planes.
  • Find a job and earn experience. Don’t expect that you would immediately be the captain of your aircraft. You must first gain flight time by working as a co-pilot or as a flight instructor before you can be hired at a major airline. Some pilots who are still starting out begin their careers by flying charter planes or finding employment in other industries.
  • Keep going. After gaining the more experience and training, you can keep advancing in your career.

Life as a Pilot

The life of a pilot is ideal for those who have adventurous souls, but before you go and set yourself to work, be forewarned that being a pilot isn’t all fun and games. As you can see, it requires hours upon hours of training schedule and licensing before you find yourself being one of the highly paid captains. Also, pilots spend months away from home without their friends and their families around.

A pilot’s lifestyle is ideal for those who do not wish to settle down and live the white picket fence life. If this sounds close to the future you’ve envisioned for yourself, see these Best Sample Resumes/CV to help you get started.
