You feel unsafe all the time, and it’s terrible. You are always on your toes and you constantly look over your shoulders. You keep an eye on the ticking clock, willing for it to go slower. Their hand print is still imprinted on your left cheek and the bruises from last week’s beating have now turned an ugly yellow. You close your eyes and pray that they leave your kids alone tonight, those poor little things. You’re dreading the moment they come home and your stomach sinks when you hear their car pull up. The last thing you remember that night was seeing their clenched fist coming straight at you.

Filling out a restraining order form is very different from other forms like, say, a Change Order Form or a Purchase Order Form. Restraining orders are serious matters. These are court orders intended to protect you and your family from being further harmed by someone.
What Does a Restraining Order Do?
A restraining order would prevent an alleged abuser to inflict harm on you or your children and would protect you from being physically or sexually abused, threatened, stalked, or harassed. These would order your abuser to stay a certain distance away from places you frequent like your home, school, or workplace. In some instances, they will also be prohibited from calling or texting you, sending you gifts, or any form of contact at all.
How to File a Restraining Order
-
Identify signs of abuse. While some forms of abuse may not be so blatant, others are literally a slap to the face. Domestic and child abuse are no joke. Seek protection immediately if you or your children are victims of abuse.
-
Obtain the right forms. You can visit the courthouse and ask the clerk for the forms for the type of restraining order you want to file. Some areas have these forms on their websites so you could print them up and submit them to the courthouse.
-
Seek legal help from a lawyer. The whole ordeal is emotionally, mentally, and psychologically draining. A lawyer could answer questions you have, counsel you on other legal actions you may carry out, and they could help you fill out the forms and make sure your request would be approved.
-
Go to the court hearing and serve the court order to the alleged abuser.
-
Remember that this is not your fault. Seek professional help from a psychologist if you feel like you can’t handle the situation.
