Generally, a vehicle release form is a formal request made to the impounding agency asking for the release of a vehicle. As in the sample case being presented in the introduction, impounding may happen due to a lot of purposes. These can range from authorities suspecting a possible stolen vehicle in an individual’s possession, a vehicle that’s been wanted for a crime being committed, or when the vehicle is suspected in a hit-and-run accident.

In order for an impounded vehicle to be released, it is very important to fill out the vehicle release form as accurately as possible and have it go through the procedure of a vehicle check before the vehicle can be released by the authorities. Usually, a police officer will sign the release order once everything is sorted out provided there are no legal complications or a case in court that warrants the further holding of the vehicle. In the United States, there are different state laws regarding the impoundment and release of vehicles that are being held, so it’s very important to check on each individual state’s laws governing impounded vehicles. There are cases when vehicles have been left forever in the impounding area and the government selling them for auction to cover the cost of impoundment after some owners decided they’re better off not to claiming their cars anymore.

In order for a vehicle to be released from an impounding area or a towing company, the owner must present all necessary papers for the release of the vehicle. These may be in the proof of ownership by presenting such documents as driver’s license, certificate of registration, insurance papers and anything that can be presented as valid proof of ownership.

For vehicles involved in an accident, a separate motor vehicle accident release form must be filed for insurance purposes. This form may be issued to free the person involved in the accident from any more liabilities incurred after the insurance company will have paid all necessary compensation for any injury incurred during the accident.
