What Are Internships

Internships, also known as OJT or “On-the-Job Training,” is a working period granted by companies to undergraduates or even fresh graduates looking to gain some experience. This is when they learn about the type of trade they have chosen, what the company does, and what their potential duties and responsibilities would be.

  • Hours of Internship. The average period for which internships are carried out is eight weeks. On the whole, internships can run from two weeks at minimum, to forty-eight weeks at the very most.
  • Pay for Internship. Most internships are not compensated monetarily. If anything, the weeks of experience that an intern accumulates is compensation enough. Although some firms do offer stipends or allowances for the intern’s performance of duties under them, and others really do offer salaries. US academic institution, West Michigan University, based off a NACE or National Association of Colleges and Employers report, recommends that the salary range for interns should be from US$13 to US$21. As a rule of thumb, the salary given is directly related to the academic level of the intern; for instance the recommended US$13 for undergraduates and US$21 for those currently in their masters degrees.

What Internships Are For

In a nutshell, experience. Undergraduates, fresh grads, and graduate students have yet to take on some working experience, and have yet to decide where they intend to take on employment. Internships grant them an idea or a starting point to these matters.

Who Offers Internships

Every type of trade or business, as seen in these samples; from social media companies to engineering, architectural, and interior decorating firms. For more on the latter, see these Interior Designer Job Description Samples.

Many academic degrees consider hours of internship or OJT as a requirement for graduation, and partner with companies in the integration of their students.

What Are the Benefits of Internships

  • For the intern. Interns fulfill their working hours with much-needed primary experience at the start of their careers. If they wish to seek further permanent employment into the companies they worked internships for, then it becomes much easier as the companies already have their information, and have already observed their working performance.
  • For the company. Internships, to the company, are thus employment opportunities, through which they are able to recognize and potentially recruit the best candidates. Thus, let these samples guide you in the creation and presentation of your internship job descriptions. For sales companies, in particular, see these Sales Representative Job Description Samples.
