What is an agenda? An agenda is basically a sequential list of events or activities that will happen for a particular session. Once a task is listed down in an agenda, it literally needs to be acted upon on since the history of the word agenda literally means “to act on or to act upon.”

In this article, we would like to let you know more about training agendas. Planning a training is critical as you need to make sure that everything is done in a step-by-step manner. It also needs to be efficient enough to ensure that everything regarding the training will be covered in a short span of time. What is a Training Agenda?

A training agenda is basically a detailed document that gives a description about how a trainer will handle a training session, how the instruction will be delivered to the trainees, and what is the schedule of the training session. If a training agenda is well written, training sessions—whether in person, over the phone, or via video call—will end up being a success.

Developing a Good Training Agenda

Coming up with training schedules, training plan, and training manuals can be quite a demanding task, but once you see your trainees learning a lot from what you are teaching them, you will definitely know that it is going to be worth it. The main ingredients required for coming up with a good training agenda? Specific, organized, and attainable.

If you want to know more about coming up with a training agenda, make sure that you keep on reading.

1. Start with the Goals

  • Think About the Goals of the Organization. Make sure that the goals of your training are in line with the goals of the organization. The goals of the organization will serve as your guide in coming up with the goals of your training agenda. Make sure that you know what you want to accomplish from the training. • List Down the Benefits for the Trainees. Make sure that you state it clearly to your trainees that there are benefits they can avail by attending the training sessions.
  • State the Possible Outcomes. Be clear about your desired outcomes. These should be stated in a specific manner. You may also want to note the benefits once you achieve the desired outcome. You may also see sample training agenda.

2. Start Developing the Agenda Content

  • Plot the Steps. A well-written training plan will indicate the steps on how you will be able to achieve your goals. Make sure that you indicate the amount of time that will be consumed for every step, how many sessions will be conducted, and the events that will be happening in every session. To make it easier for you to come up with the content of your training agenda, you may want to start with a training outline.
  • List Down the Lessons. List down the complete syllabus of the training that will be conducted. You want to make sure that you list down all of the needed materials as well and the specific activities that will happen.
    • You may also want to include how modules will be distributed (email, mail, in person, etc.).
    • List down the tasks that will be conducted. you may also like sample staff meeting agenda templates.
  • Outline the Structure of the Training. Make sure that you include the methods on how you will deliver the lessons to the trainees. Explain whether the training will be a one-on-one session, a group session, an online session, or a combination of all the methods. Just make sure that you are specific. Remember that the best training agendas have a ton of details. You may also check out workshop agenda examples.
  • Include a Time Frame. Your time frame should include the amount of time that you will allot for every session especially if the trainees need to finish the training for a certain period. Include a timeline for preparing the modules, schedules, and the lesson plans as well.
  • Add a Section for Training Preparation. Since a training agenda is a comprehensive document, you want to make sure that you also include what you need to prepare for every session or every lesson. Again, be very specific.

3. Finalizing the Agenda

  • Include an Evaluation Form. You want to make sure that you evaluate your trainees. This way, you will know the progress of your trainees and you will know if there is a need for you to review certain topics and if you have a trainee that needs to work harder in order to catch up. You can find our article on Sample Training Evaluation Forms in DOC for more information on how you can evaluate your trainees.
  • Prepare Training Alternatives. Trainees respond to the training in a different manner. Should cases like these arise, you want to make sure that you are prepared to offer alternative means of teaching your trainees. Make sure that you also state this on your training agenda.
  • Include Who the Participants are. If you are preparing a training agenda for a trainer, you want to make sure that he/she knows how to address the audience of the training. This is why it is important to include who the trainees will be. You may also see sample political agenda templates.
  • Ask for Help from Colleagues. If there are certain topics that you might not be that familiar with, you can ask a colleague who is an expert or has knowledge about the certain topic for some advice or help.
  • Choose the Best Trainers. You want to make sure that the people who will be training the trainees are qualified to conduct the training.

Tips for a Making Training Effective

  1. Choose a Good Time and a Good Location. Choose a location that will be able to accommodate the number of trainees that will be attending the training sessions. Once you have chosen the place already, make sure that you are able to reserve it as soon as possible. You may also see sample event agenda templates.
  2. Practice Your Presentation. You want to make sure that you sound like an expert on what you will be presenting. Practice in front of a mirror or with a friend.
  3. Prepare the Handouts. Handouts will help the trainees retain more information and be able to follow what has been discussed. It will also become easier for them to review what has been discussed. You may also like weekly agenda samples.
  4. Prepare Visual Aids. Visual aids will aid your presentation. Make sure to keep it clean and simple. Rehearse the corresponding discussions that you have for the visual aids.
  5. Prepare Backups. If you are using a laptop or gadget for your presentations, make sure that batteries are fully charged, you have backup batteries, or you brought the charger. This ensures that your gadget will always be on while you are doing your presentations. In case of power outage, direct your trainees to the handout that you have prepared for them. You may also check out meeting agenda samples.
  6. Audience Participation. Training sessions can become a bit boring. To ease the boredom of your trainees, you can come up with activities that would need the participation of your audience. You might want to check out event agendas.
  7. End with an Open Forum. Question and answer portion of your training should be saved at the end of the session. For sure, your audience will have a lot of questions after each session.
  8. Provide Snacks. Providing an assortment of light refreshments can help to ensure that your audience remains focused and attentive to your discussions. You might be interested in agenda format samples.
  9. Provide Basic Items. Have a pencil/pen and paper ready to ensure that your trainees have backup note-taking materials should they forget their own.
  10. Adjust Your Pace. Be observant. If you feel like your trainees are having a hard time keeping up with your current pace, slow down a bit.

Training Agenda Final Touches

  1. Keep the agenda short yet packed with enough details to ensure all the trainees have a good idea of what will be discussed.
  2. Use a free agenda template especially if it is your first time to come up with your very own training agenda. Customize the template accordingly.
  3. Seek help from your colleagues.
  4. Check for errors and mistakes. Edit everything accordingly.
